Meet Judge Dredd and Friends

The Iconic Legion will be with us tomorrow raising money for the Chestnut Tree House, so please get a picture of a legend and give generously to a great local charity!

Warlord Games

Gambit Games would like to say a massive thank you to ...

They have been a great support to CONQUEST this year and to be fair we would have struggled to do the event with out them. They will be in the main hall with lots of great product to sell. As well as being able to answer any questions you have about any of their games.

They will also be demoing their games - so it will be a good chance to lear to play.

There are also still spaces in the Bolt Action Tournament for those that want to play.

Polar Panic

There will be a couple of new games at CONQUEST and one which is special to me as I am involved in its development is Polar Panic (working title)...

This is a game in its testing phase that is being jointly developed by Black Box and KD Games. Some of you I know have played it but it has changed over the last few weeks and we would really appreciate some honest feedback. The game has recently been tested in Germany and we will be adding some of the things that were disucessed there! If you get a chance then please have a go - it will be in the main hall next to the Black Box Stand

Mario Kart

In the Council Chambers which is where the Bolt Action Tournament and the Pokemon Event is being held you will find something a thats a bit of a different pace.

In fact the faster the better, our friends from the Shoreham Pokemon League will be hosting a Mario Kart time trail.

Simply put in your best lap and see if it is good enough to be the fasted of the day. It will cost just £1 for a try and there will be a prize for whoever is the quickest on the day.

It will be available from 11am - so if you think your quick, why not prove it and have a go.

The best bit is that even if you are the slowest you will still be doing your bit to help out our charity which is the Chestnut Tree House.

Monday 22 September 2014

X-Wing Tournament

As you may well know there is an X-Wing tournament being held at this years CONQUEST, here are a few of the details...

The tournament will be a Dogfight event over three rounds with 60 minutes per round. The event will start at 18:00, but players can register at any point during the day.

EVENT OFFICIALS : Kevin Hearne and Colin Capelin

Each tournament round, players will score points based on the result of their game. After the three rounds, the top point-scorer is the winner of the tournament.

Squad Building

Each player must build one squad for use in an X-Wing tournament.
The maximum squad points for each player is 100 points. A squad cannot exceed 100 points, though it may contain fewer than 100 points.
Each player may choose to field either a Rebel or Imperial squad.
Each player must submit his squad composition, including all associated Upgrade cards and total squad points, to the TO before the start of the tournament. Players must use the same squad for the duration of the tournament, including all Ship and Upgrade cards.
Each player must bring an X-Wing core set and any additional components he needs for his squad. This includes but is not limited to dice, a range ruler, maneuver templates, asteroid tokens and a complete damage deck. A player cannot bring more than one copy of each asteroid token.

Squad Deployment Procedure

The following steps must be performed before each game begins:
1. Each player places his squad outside of the play area next to his assigned player edge.
2. Both players reveal all components in their squads and assign ID tokens to any ships that have a duplicate on the same team. If both players fielded squads from the same faction, ID tokens are assigned to all ships. 3. Each player shuffles his Damage deck thoroughly and presents it to his opponent. His opponent may shuffle and cut the deck if desired.
4. Players determine initiative. Initiative goes to the player with the lowest squad point total. If both
players are tied with the same squad point total, initiative goes to the player who wins a coin toss.
5. Each player selects three asteroid tokens from his core set. Then the players take turns placing
their chosen asteroid tokens into the play area, alternating after each token is placed. The player
with initiative places the first asteroid token. An asteroid token cannot be placed within Range 1–2
of any edge of the play area or within Range 1 of another asteroid token. Players continue until all
six asteroid tokens are placed.
6. Players place their ships in ascending order of pilot skill as per standard X-Wing rules.
7. Players activate shields and prepare any special components they may need, then begin the match following the rules presented in the X-Wing Rules of Play.

End of Match

Each tournament match ends in one of the following three ways:

All of one player’s ships are destroyed. The player with at least one ship remaining immediately earns a Match Win, and his opponent receives a Match Loss. If neither player has any remaining ships, the game ends in a Draw.
At the end of the current round, the match time limit has been reached. Each player calculates the
total point value of his remaining ships in the play area, including Upgrade cards equipped to those
ships. The player with the highest squad point total of remaining ships receives a Modified Match
Win, and his opponent receives a Match Loss. If the winning player has a remaining squad point
total that exceeds his opponent’s total by 33 points or more, he receives a Match Win instead. If
both players have the same squad point total for their remaining ships, the game ends in a Draw.
A player voluntarily concedes defeat at any point during the match. By conceding defeat, he receives a Match Loss and his opponent receives a Match Win. It is considered good sportsmanship to concede defeat when there is no reasonable chance for victory.

Scoring

Players earn tournament points at the end of each match as follows:
Match Win = 5 points
Modified Match Win = 3 points
Draw = 1 point
Match Loss = 0 points

Breaking Ties

If players have identical win-loss records, the tie is broken based on the difficulty of their competition. If the tied players have played against each other, the player that won that match wins the tie. If they have not, “tie-breaker points” are awarded by calculating the strength of each player’s schedule by combining total match points of all their opponents. The player with the most tie-breaker points wins the tie and advances. This way, the person who played the most “difficult” games wins the tie. This procedure is also called the “strength of schedule.”

Let the games begin...

At CONQUEST we are delighted to have the brand new game ...

Overview

Our future world is broken. The masses are kept in line by unseen powers that wrest for dominance. Powerful figures have carved dominance out of the world’s developing technologies and theologies, by manipulating the populace and creating a series of Oligarchies. This world can’t be saved, only controlled.

Corporations have openly merged with governments and media organisations to control us. Education is being replaced with information, which can be manipulated, bought, and sold. Economics and fiscal matters are controlled to keep the population enslaved into a cycle of work and compliance through fear.

The ecologists and those of religious faith have gained power as the populace crave freedom from the oppression. Supporters rally to worship deities and mother earth in the hopes that strength in numbers and firm belief in the power of good can change the future and punish the heretical activities of governments and corporations. As always, even this power breeds corruption beneath the surface.

The military strive for nothing more than full control of any civil unrest and will protect those that fund, rather than those it was supposed to serve. We see the bolder emergence of criminal and illuminati figureheads. Some say alien influence may have heralded new developments in technology and paranormal endeavours which these factions are beginning to wield to gain yet more power.

You have struggled your entire life to carve out a piece of this dystopian future. Your power has grown to a level where you have heads of corporations, military leaders, and shadowy agents at your disposal. Those you can’t control with Power; you buy with your amassed wealth and influence. You are the leader of your own Oligarchy.

Others are attempting to stand in your way; you can feel your power slipping as they draw their plans against you. It’s clear then… they must be crushed if you are to survive. Let the games begin!

Something your not using?

Have you got games or models that you simply don't use any more. Maybe you have something that you had planned to put together or play and simply never got around to it.

If so then maybe A&B Gaming can help, they will be at this years CONQUEST and will be organising a gaming bring and buy sale. Simply bring along what it is that you don't want and an idea of what you want for it and speak to Bo on the A&B stand. He will then agree the prices with you and try to sell it on your behalf during the event. He may even buy it from you if your lucky!

Board Games Library

At Conquest we will have plenty of space for you to play pretty much any game you like, as long as you have it that is. There will be tables set up for free play in all our rooms and there will be no necessity to book them, just find a table and play.

If you have nothing to play in addition to the fact that you may we be able to but something from one of our traders, we will also be operating a Board Game Library.

This will be located in the main hall and will allow you the chance to borrow one of our games for you to play with a group of friends or maybe even people you have met at the event. Our club members will be on hand to help with the rules if needed. All we ask is that you treat the games with respect and return them as you find them. We will also not allow food or drink on tables being used for library games.

If you want to know more or want to request a game that we could bring then email us on gambitgamesuk@gmail.com and we will see what we can do.

The library will be open through out the event including the evening, so there should be plenty of time to play a game or two!

Brighton Hero Clix

Brighton Hero Clix will be at CONQUEST from doors open until 1pm to demonstrate Hero Clix, which is a really easy game to learn and great fun to play.

After 1pm they will be hosting a 400 point theme team tournament. More details can be found on there facebook page

What will you need to do.

When coming down you will need to think about accommodation, where are you going to stay?

Money for food and drinks.

For the event you will need to bring:

Your rule book(s).
2 x copies of your army list chosen for the event.
Your activation dice and normal dice.
Something to draw the activation dice from.
Tape measure.
Glue(s) just in case.

Tournament Rules

1. FORCES

Players must use a 750 requisition points force.
The force must consist of a maximum of one Reinforced Platoon or one theatre selector
The platoon/selector must be selected using the army list section of any one of the following supplement books:
- Armies of Germany.
- Armies of United States.
- Armies of Great Britain.
- Armies of the Soviet Union.
- Armies of Imperial Japan.
- Armies of France and the Allies.
- Armies of Italy and the Axis.
The platoon/selector must be formed either according to the generic reinforced platoon selector (see page 124 of the BA rulebook) or one of the theatre selectors from the chosen supplement book.

2. GAME TIME

After 1 hour and 45 minutes of gameplay, the players must finish the current turn, and then the game ends automatically.

3. ARMY LIST

The players must write down the army list they are going to use for the duration of the entire tournament. They must leave a copy of their list to the referee before the start of the tournament. The force list is public and the opponent can always look at it and ask you questions about your force.

4. MATCH-UPS

The match-ups of Game 1 will be random. In the following games players will be matched using Tournament Points (TP) and Casualty points, as explained below.

5. SCENARIOS

The following scenarios will be played, as described in the BA rulebook, on table with terrain that hs been pre-set by the Conquest judges.
Game 1: Hold Until Relieved.
Game 2: Maximum Attrition.
Game 3: Demolition.

6. TOURNAMENT POINTS (TP)

Victory is calculated as described in the Scenarios being played and Tournament points are awarded for victories, defeats and draws as shown below:

Result
Tournament Points
Victory
3 TP
Draw
1 TP
Loss
0 TP

In addition, players must also record how many requisition points of enemy units they destroy during their games. These destroyed enemies points (let’s call them ‘Casualty points’) are always added together in a running total and are used as a tiebreaker to pair players that are on the same level of Tournament points.
From the second round, players will be paired using a Swiss system (i.e. matching players on the same amount of TPs, in descending order).
In case of more than two players on the same number of TPs, players will be matched in descending ‘Casualty points’ total.
If they have the same TP and Casualty points total, players will be paired in alphabetic order.
When two players that have already met in a previous turn are matched to play each other again, they must randomly select opponents from the players on the next table down. This rule does not apply on the top five tables during the last turn of the tournament.

7. WINNING THE TOURNAMENT

The winner is determined at the end of the last round, according to the following criteria:
  • The player with the most TP will be the winner.
  • In case of same TP at the top, the winner will be the player with the highest Casualty points total.
  • In case of same Casualty points total, we’ll see if the players have played each other during the course of the tournament and the winner will be the winner of such match.
  • If the players never met in the tournament, the tournament ends with a joint victory and the players share the first prize.

Hopefully we will see you at CONQUEST, good luck to all those attending and taking part in the competition.
If you have question please feel free to contact the Conquest team via Facebook or pm me on the Walrod Forum (username USMCSerg)

Looking forward to seeing you.

Paul

APPENDIX 1. “Wait a second! We both have US forces! Surely we cannot fight one another?!” or “A note on historicity”.

Open Bolt Action Tournaments have a very relaxed attitude and basically encourage the idea of simply collecting a force you like and turn up for a few games with friends, where we suspend disbelief and enjoy the game without trying to make it ‘historically plausible’.
If you need to explain to yourself why, for example, these Germans are fighting against other Germans, there are several ways of looking at it: you can either assume it is just an exercise, part of a massive set of manoeuvres, or a ‘what if’ scenario depicting a hypothetical confrontation between different factions of the same country (easier to imagine with some belligerent nation’s forces than others…).
On the other hand, if you don’t like this Open style, look out for ‘Historical’ tournament and events, where for example 50% of the players will have Axis forces and 50% Allied forces, or the army restrictions have been fine-tuned to represent a particular period (early war, late war…), or a specific theatre (Eastern Front, Pacific). To each his own!

APPENDIX 2. Additional rules for Conquest Bolt Action Open.

Along with the tournament rules above we have decided to apply the following rules:

  1. Armoured platoons are not to be used.
  2. The alternative warplane rules are not to be used.
  3. There is no dice limit.
  4. After much talk and discussions it has been decided for this tournament your army doesn’t have to be painted. Although all models must be WYSIWYG, converted models maybe used so long as the model is to the appropriate scale and is WYSIWYG.
  5. Other manufacture models maybe used, again and long as they are at the appropriate scale.

PRODOS GAMES

War Zone Resurrection is a game for two or more players, each fielding units of warriors drawn from one of the mighty MegaCorporations of Mankind, the Brotherhood or its vile enemy, the Dark Legion.

Warzone Resurrection is a fast paced, exciting and tactical miniature game created by Prodos Games Ltd. and Paraodox Entertainment.

The Warzone Resurrection project brings the tabletop game well and truly into the 21st century. Lovingly, we have taken essence and best bits from the game, art and prose of previous editions to produce all new miniatures, a background re-imagining (by Warzone mega-fan and writing genius, Andy Hoare) and an exciting innovative gaming system.

The gaming system involves both miniatures and cards. The minis are your skirmish force and the cards represent game resources, additional wargear, global and local effects on the battlefield etc.. In a real battle it is likely that a soldier wouldn't know his opponents wargear, whether they have grenades or a laser-sight for example. Both sides might be surprised by a Martian earthquake or Mercurian solar flare. The Venusian jungle cover you are in might be better (or worse) than you thought! War is rarely predictable, especially when it takes place on the planets, planetoids and asteroids of the solar system! All these and many more variables are represented by the cards you and your opponent play. Making Warzone Resurrection a truly novel, realistic and exciting tabletop miniature skirmish game!

We are pleased to announce that PRODOS will be at Conquest to demonstrate this great game! If you want to know more then please visit their website ... http://prodosgames.com/

If you have not seen these guys before they have some great costumes the quality of which is really amazing! So if you want a chance to meet with Batman or maybe get arrested by a Judge from 2000AD then this is you chance to do just that, get a picture to prove it and give some money to a really worthy cause!

The charity that we have chosen to collect for is the Chestnut Tree House which is the only children's hospice in East and West Sussex and cares for over 280 children and young adults from 0-25 years of age with progressive life-limiting conditions from Sussex and South East Hampshire.
